Fort Scott begins its pursuit of an SEK League championship against a Bulldogs team playing its first home game of the season.
The opening two weeks gave the Fort Scott Tigers an opportunity to learn, adjust and establish their identity. Tonight, the stakes begin to rise.
Fort Scott travels to Independence for a Week 3 matchup against the Bulldogs and the opening game of SEK League play for both teams. Every conference championship begins somewhere, and for the Tigers, that pursuit begins with another test on the road.
Fort Scott enters tonight with momentum following a 61–13 victory over Parsons. More important than revisiting every touchdown or defensive highlight is what the performance showed: the Tigers can be explosive offensively, create game-changing plays defensively and maintain their intensity for four quarters.
The challenge now is proving they can do it again.
Quarterback Dredyn Marlow gives Fort Scott a dangerous playmaker who can attack a defense with both his arm and his legs. The offensive line will be called upon to set the tone, create running lanes and keep the Tigers out of difficult third-down situations.
Fort Scott does not need to rely solely on explosive plays to be successful. Sustaining drives, controlling possession and finishing opportunities in the red zone could prove just as important against Independence.
Defensively, the Tigers will look to make the Bulldogs uncomfortable from the opening possession. Fort Scott’s defensive front, including Isaak Bishop and Bryson Clark—the “Law Office of Bishop & Clark” has shown the ability to disrupt plays before they can develop.
The Tigers should also welcome Kyler Keating back this week after he was sidelined by illness. Pairing Keating back up with the hard-hitting nucleus of Creed Clayton, Paxton Allen, Rush Newton and Shai Kennedy would bring the Fort Scott defense closer to all hands on deck, as we enter league play.
If the Tigers can stop the run early and force Independence into obvious passing situations, Fort Scott will have opportunities to bring pressure and create turnovers as Week 1 player of the Week Cole Doherty knows about after getting 2 INTs in Week 1, fellow running mates Gavin Aikin and Jax Armstrong will be looking to get their first of the season possibly tonight.
Independence enters tonight’s matchup with a 1–1 record, but this will be the Bulldogs’ first opportunity to play in front of their home crowd this season. The Independence players should arrive energized and ready to defend their home turf, adding another challenge to an already important conference road game for Fort Scott.
The Tigers must be prepared to match that energy from the opening kickoff.
Road conference games can turn on penalties, turnovers and field position. Fort Scott cannot afford to give Independence short fields or allow the excitement surrounding the Bulldogs’ home opener to become a deciding factor. Discipline and communication will be just as important as athleticism.
Tonight also represents a test of maturity. It is one thing to produce a dominant performance. It is another to build upon it without becoming satisfied.
The Tigers must arrive in Independence focused on the game in front of them, and officially turn the page on Parson’s. Which I believe Coach Stark does a good job with and teaching the boys enjoy the win, but prepare for the next one!
A victory would give Fort Scott an important 1–0 start in league play and an early foothold in the conference standings. A loss would leave the Tigers chasing the leaders as the heart of the schedule approaches, with a future Week 4 matchup with Pittsburg who already is 1-0 in the SEK League on the Horizon this game would be a good win for the Tigers!
Independence should provide a tougher test than Fort Scott faced one week ago, especially with the Bulldogs playing their home opener. Still, if the Tigers establish their running game, control the line of scrimmage and avoid costly mistakes, they have the playmakers to pull away.
Fort Scott 34, Independence 15
The Bulldogs will defend their home turf with plenty of energy, but Fort Scott’s physicality and ability to create explosive plays should ultimately be the difference.
The road to an SEK League championship begins tonight in Independence.
